Derry peace activist knew a healing process is part and parcel of a lasting peace

In a cosy corner of the library at Trinity College Dublin, John Hume’s legacy was recently being celebrated by a garland of glossy photos and a newly unveiled bronze bust. A small gathering of family, friends and invited guests heard stories of Hume’s tireless struggle for peace, which eventually brought about the Good Friday Agreement.

Outside, a soft rain pattered away at the dimly lit city where a group of people near the Dáil were calling for a ceasefire in another bloody mess — the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
