On The Martin Lewis Money Show on ITV last month, the eponymous money expert issued his annual clarion call to UK consumers: forgo unnecessary Christmas presents.

“Many people feel obliged to buy gifts for others that they know they won’t use, with money they don’t have, and cause themselves stress they don’t need,” Lewis said.
