On my first ever day on skis, I thought I was God’s gift to snow sports. On my second, I found myself perched perilously on the side of a decidedly not-steep slope, frozen in fear with my legs shaking, and tears streaming down my face.

Perhaps I had overestimated my ability to transition from bunny to blue slope (it may even have been green). But at least I had stunning views of the Pyrenees to ease my panicked mind. And with some careful coaching from kind instructor Frank, I made it to flat ground — physically intact, but with some dignity left behind in the slush.
