What I’ve learned as a woman travelling solo – ‘the benefits have always outweighed the downsides’

I was barely nine years old when I embarked on my first solo outing. One mid-summer’s Sunday afternoon, for whatever reason, I was overcome with a hankering to see my Granny, Roseanne. She lived at Creesil farm, six miles away outside Monaghan town.

The first half-hour was strictly a solo initiative. Then I passed my younger cousin Anita’s house, on the other side of the Clones Road. Thinking my daring plan on the deadly side, she begged from her front garden: “Can I come too?”
