Newstalk’s Clare McKenna on becoming a health coach: ‘I threw away all of the focus on weight and how I looked’

After years of trying every fad diet or exercise programme, broadcaster Clare McKenna found a new way to look at well-being from inside and out. Now she wants to cut through the noise of the so-called wellness industry

Clare McKenna, presenter of Newtalk’s Alive and Kicking health show, first became interested in the topics her show covers when she was only 18. New to the working world and having recently moved out of her family home, the internet company where she worked would send its employees on courses that would probably now be described as wellness, such as positive thinking and goal setting.

“I’ve always been interested in this area,” Clare (45) explains now, smiling. “I’ve tried every single exercise class and back then, I would have tried every fad, every diet. Whatever was going in the health and wellness world, I was drinking it, I was eating it, I was reading about it. I’m really into personal development.”
