The Black Friday sales have arrived, bringing weeks of discounts in stores and online. All of the hype is designed to tempt us to go on a wild spending spree, but before hitting the shops, always ask yourself: do I need it? Can I afford it? If not, don’t buy it. After all, it’s only a saving if you were going to buy it anyway.

Many retailers bluster about big markdowns when the “original” price is far inflated and they’ve really been charging the current “sale” price, or close to it, for months. It can be tricky to check the price history, but two helpful resources are CamelCamelCamel, which tracks Amazon prices, and the Wayback Machine’s internet archive, which captures screenshots of websites over time, allowing you to compare prices.
