The reaction last week from the murkier depths of X, the open sewer formerly known as Twitter, to news of the cutbacks at RTÉ was predictably inane.

Taking a moment’s break from whipping up hatred against immigrants and bothering librarians, a bozo from the far-right Irish Freedom Party (IFP) called for RTÉ to be closed down completely.
