Mercedes launches new E-Class and CLE models

Mercedes-Benz has launched an all new E-Class

Mercedes has launched two new models – one of which replaces two forerunners.

First up was the new E-Class, designed to keep current owners loyal while attempting to win younger drivers. This new E takes the car further up the luxury ladder, the company claims.

It has a striking front, with a stretched bonnet. Inside is plush and posh, but four of us in a short drive found the back seat not very roomy. Luggage capacity is now 540 litres.

There are more driver assistance systems, better communications, a music and entertainment package. You can even have video conferencing (while static, I hope).

There is also the latest MBUX Superscreen through which information, communications, entertainment and guidance systems are managed.

There are three petrols (E200, E300e, E450 4MATIC) and three diesels (E220d, E300de and E450d 4MATIC) – two with mild hybrid systems.

The E220d and E200 saloons (€80,525,€82,130 respectively) are expected to be the most popular. Pricing for diesel and petrol plug-in hybrids will be revealed before the launch.

There is also the CLE coupe. It replaces C-Class and E-Class coupes. Sharp looks and low-slung gait show it to best effect.

Inside, there is a 312mm instrument cluster and 302mm central touchscreen display. New electronic architecture means fast 5G data transmission. There will be three models: CLE 220, CLE 300 and CLE 450. Plug-in hybrid and cabriolet versions will be added. Prices range from €73,215.
