Review: The new electric Subaru Solterra can take you off-road – but not as far as you'd like

The Japanese maker used to be known for its rally cars and very capable on-road models — but can its latest car, a collaboration with Toyota, live up to past glories?

The Subaru Solterra Touring AWD comes with permanent all-wheel drive

Subaru has built a reputation since the 1980s for cars that were just as capable on road as they were off. Despite not being involved in the world of rallying for more than a decade, the gold and blue rally-inspired cars such as the Impreza and the WRX STI have become embedded in the brand’s DNA.

Our test car this week, the Solterra, is the result of a joint collaboration with Toyota. Essentially it’s the same basic car as Toyota’s bZ4X. Outside it shares the same distinctive sharp and angular silhouette, a look that won’t be to all tastes. There are, though, subtle differences between the two cars, including the badges obviously but the front has Subaru’s hexagon grille and front lights.
