Munster have been dealt a big blow ahead of an important run of games, as Jean Kleyn has been ruled out until the new year with an eye issue.

The South African World Cup winner suffered the injury in the recent defeat to Leinster, and as a result, Kleyn attended a specialist review last Tuesday and Wednesday before the lock has a further follow-up before Christmas.

Kleyn’s absence was felt in last weekend's win over Glasgow, particularly around the maul, where Munster conceded five tries.

As previously reported, Graham Rowntree will also have to plan with Peter O’Mahony, but the Munster head coach hopes to have the Ireland flanker back for next week's trip to Exeter.

In a further double setback, lock Jack Daly (ankle) and winger Liam Coombes (shoulder) both underwent surgery last week and will begin rehab.

In better news for Munster, Pa Campbell (ankle) has returned to training, while Jack O’Donoghue (ankle) and Simon Zebo (knee) will hopefully do the same this week.

The availability of Campbell, O’Donoghue and Zebo for Saturday’s visit of Bayonne to Thomond Park will be determined later in the week.

RG Snyman (chest/shoulder), Joey Carbery (wrist), Roman Salanoa (knee), Mike Haley (hip), Cian Hurley (ankle/achilles) and Niall Scannell (groin) remain sidelined.
