Ever since humanity first invented the concept of money and stuff to spend it on, the public has imitated the preferences of anyone who was rich, famous, good-looking or in any way cooler than us.

Suppose such-and-such a handsome young Gallic king would decide he liked powdered wigs; within weeks everyone with designs on courtly advancement had to wear one. What would follow was a sort of trickle-down effect and, before you knew it, the entire continent had a fine dusting of starch.
